The Place Beyond The Pines

Genre:
Drama

Directed by:
Derek Cianfrance

Starring:
Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Greta Gerwig

Release date:
Fri 29, Mar 2013

The Place Beyond the Pines is a 2013  crime drama film directed by Derek Cianfrance, written by Cianfrance, Ben Coccio and Darius Marder. It stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, and Ray Liotta. The film reunites Cianfance and Gosling, with whom he worked on 2010's Blue Valentine. The title is the English meaning of the city of Schenectady, New York, which is derived loosely from a Mohawk word for "place beyond the pine plains.

Plot

Luke Glanton (Gosling) is a locally-famous motorcycle stuntman working in a traveling act for state fairs. While the fair is in Schenectady, Glanton is visited by his former lover, Romina (Mendes), who tells him that she has a son that belongs to Glanton. Glanton quits his job as a stuntman to stay in town and provide for his child, but Romina does not want him in the child’s life, as she has started a family with another man, Kofi.
Glanton turns to Robin, an auto repair shop owner, for part-time employment as he continuously attempts to insert himself into his son’s life. Making only minimum wage, Glanton asks Robin for more money to care for his son. Robin reveals that he was once a bank robber, and offers to partner with Glanton to hit several banks in the area. The duo perform several successful heists, in which Glanton performs the robbery, then uses his motorbike as a getaway vehicle and drives it into the unmarked truck driven by Robin. Glanton uses the new money to win back Romina’s trust and visits her and his son more often. Romina’s live-in boyfriend, Kofi, objects to his presence, and the two have an altercation at Kofi’s house that results in Glanton’s arrest for assault after he hits Kofi in the head with a wrench.
Robin bails Glanton from jail, who immediately wants to resume their bank robberies. Robin objects, not wanting to press their luck, and the two have a falling-out that results in Glanton stealing back the bail money he owed Robin at gunpoint. Glanton attempts to rob a bank alone, and is pursued by police. He falls off his bike during the chase and seeks refuge in a resident’s home, where he is pursued by Officer Avery Cross (Cooper). Glanton, sensing defeat, corners himself upstairs and calls Romina. Just before Cross confronts him, Glanton asks Romina not to tell their child about who he was. Cross enters the room and fires the first shot; Glanton falls out the second-story window after shooting Cross in the leg. Glanton does not survive the fall.
The narrative switches to Cross, who is a low-ranking officer that gains hero status after his takedown of the notorious Glanton. Cross is guilty about his actions, especially upon discovering that Glanton had a son, as Cross has an infant of his own. Cross’s fellow officers want justice for Cross’s injured leg, so they unlawfully seize the robbed money from Romina’s home and give it to Cross to keep. Cross eventually brings the situation to his commanding officer, Deluca (Liotta), who dismisses the charges, unwilling to indict his own department. Still seeking justice, Cross manages to record a fellow officer bribing him, and uses the recording to blackmail his way into getting a position as the assistant defense attorney.
Fifteen years later, Cross is running for public office, and has to deal with his now high school-aged son AJ, who has gotten into trouble with drugs. Cross has separated from his wife and agrees to take AJ into his home, transferring him into the local high school. There AJ befriends Jason, whom neither of the boys know is the son of Luke Glanton. The two are arrested for felony drug possession, and when Cross is called in to pick up his son, he recognizes Jason’s name and realizes who he is. He pulls some strings to get Jason’s charge dropped to a misdemeanor, and orders AJ to stay away from Jason (though the boys continue to talk).
Jason seeks the truth about his biological father, whom Romina refuses to discuss with him. He Googles his father’s name and discovers Glanton’s past. He visits Robin’s auto shop, who tells Jason more about Luke, including his superior motorbiking skills. Jason eventually realizes that AJ’s father is the man who killed his own father. Seeking revenge, he breaks into Cross’s house and beats AJ at gunpoint. When Cross arrives home, Jason holds him hostage and orders him to drive into the woods. As Jason prepares to kill Cross to avenge his father, Cross apologizes for what he did to Glanton. Jason feels regret and runs away, leaving Cross behind.
Cross wins his bid for public office, his son AJ at his side. Jason runs away from home and buys a motorbike, with the intention of heading west to make his own life as a traveler, like his father.

Release date:
Fri 29, Mar 2013

The Host is an American film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's novel of the same name. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel. It is set to be released on March 29, 2013.

Plot

In the future, the human race has been assimilated by benevolent extraterrestrial psychic parasites called "Souls". Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), a human, is captured by the Seeker (Diane Kruger) and infused with a soul called "Wanderer", in order to discover the location of one of the last pockets of non-assimilated humans. However, Melanie survives the procedure and begins to struggle for control of her body.
Wanderer discovers that Melanie was captured while scavenging for food with her brother Jamie Stryder (Chandler Canterbury) and her boyfriend Jared Howe (Max Irons), and that they were looking for Melanie's uncle Jeb Stryder (William Hurt), who lives in a cabin in the desert. Wanderer loses control of Melanie and the Seeker decides to put Wanderer in a different body and be insterted into Melanie to get the information herself. With the help of Melanie, Wanderer escapes and makes her way to the desert, eventually found by a group of humans, including Jeb. She is taken to a series of underground caves, discovering that Jared and Jamie are living there too.
Wanderer is kept isolated from the others, eventually interacting with the humans, and develops feelings for one of them, Ian O'Shea (Jake Abel), beginning to believe the Souls shouldn't steal other people's free will. Eventually, Jeb, Jamie and Ian realize Melanie is still alive, while The Seeker learns that the community is located somewhere in the desert and follows Wanderer there, but fails to locate them. After nearly being captured by the Seeker, Ian's brother Kyle O'Shea (Boyd Holbrook) attempts to kill Wanderer, but is stopped by Ian and another human, Wes, after which Jared also learns that Melanie is still alive.
Wanderer is horrified to learn that Doc (Scott Lawrence), the community's medic, has been experimenting on people infused with Souls, removing the Souls from their bodies and killing them, and isolates herself from the group, but agrees to help Jared infiltrate a Soul medical facility to steal technology to cure the ill Jamie. In the process, they are attacked by the Seeker, who is then shot and captured by Jeb. The Seeker is taken to the caves, where she is removed from her host and contained in a pod stolen by Wanderer, who then sends the Seeker to a distant planet.
Wanderer teaches Doc how to remove the Souls from people's bodies without harming them, and asks to be removed from Melanie's so Melanie can have her life back. Melanie protests, having bonded with Wanderer, but Doc goes through with the procedure. However, rather than letting Wanderer die, Doc inserts her into Pet (Emily Browning), a human who was left brain-dead after the Soul inside her was removed. Wanderer, now in Pet's body, begins a relationship with Ian, while Melanie reunites with Jared. A few months later, Wanderer and the others meet another group of humans who have been joined by Souls who have decided to live peacefully among them.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (also known as G.I. Joe 2 or G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation) is 2013 American action thriller directed by Jon M. Chu, based on Hasbro's G.I. Joe toy, comic and media franchises. It is a sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The film was written by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. G.I. Joe: Retaliation features an ensemble cast, starring Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson, with Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, and Lee Byung-hun reprising their roles from the first film. The US release date is March 29, 2013.

Plot

The Joes are framed for stealing nuclear warheads from Pakistan by Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) who is impersonating the President of the United States (Jonathan Pryce). The entire team is eliminated in a military strike, with Duke (Channing Tatum) as one of the casualties. Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), Flint (D.J. Cotrona) and Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) are the only survivors.
Meanwhile, Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) and ex-Joe Firefly (Ray Stevenson) rescue Cobra Commander (Luke Bracey) from a penitentiary in Germany. Storm Shadow is injured during the escape, and retreats to a temple in the Himalayas to recover. Upon learning that he is alive, the Blind Master (RZA), leader of the Arashikage Clan, sends Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and his apprentice Jinx (Elodie Yung), Storm Shadow's cousin, to capture Storm Shadow so he can answer for the murder of his uncle, the Hard Master.
Roadblock, Flint, and Lady Jaye return to the United States where they set up a base of operations in a rundown gym. After Zartan announces that Cobra will replace the Joes as America's main protective unit, Lady Jaye deduces that someone is impersonating the President, and Roadblock leads them to General Joseph Colton (Bruce Willis), who provides them with weapons and helps them infiltrate a fundraising event that the President will be attending. Lady Jaye steals a sample of the President's DNA and confirms that he is Zartan. They escape after a brief confrontation with Firefly and Zandar (Matt Gerald), the head of the Presidential Detail and a member of Cobra.
Snake Eyes and Jinx locate and capture Storm Shadow after a battle with ninjas and take him back to Japan, where Storm Shadow reveals that Zartan murdered the Hard Master and he joined Cobra to avenge his uncle. Storm Shadow then accompanies Snake Eyes and Jinx as they join the Joes' efforts to stop Cobra.
Zartan invites the world leaders to a summit, where he blackmails them into disabling their nuclear arsenals, and reveals that he has created Project Zeus: seven orbital kinetic bombardment weapons of mass destruction at his command. He destroys London to prove his superiority, and threatens to destroy other capitals if the countries don't submit to Cobra. However, Storm Shadow betrays Cobra Commander and kills Zartan, revealing Cobra's deception to the world leaders. While Snake Eyes, Jinx, and Flint fight Cobra's soldiers, Cobra Commander activates the remaining six weapons and instructs Firefly to protect the launch device. Firefly is killed in combat with Roadblock, who deactivates and destroys the orbital weapons. Meanwhile, Colton and Lady Jaye rescue the President.
Cobra Commander escapes during the battle and Storm Shadow disappears after avenging his uncle. The real President addresses the nation at a ceremony where Roadblock, Jaye, Flint, Jinx, and Snake Eyes are commemorated as heroes. Colton thanks each of them, and presents Roadblock with the gun of General Patton, for when he finally finds Cobra Commander. Roadblock proudly raises the gun in the air and lets out one shot.

It will star Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Emma Stone, Clark Duke, and Cloris Leachman.        The Croods is being written and directed by Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, and produced by Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell. It is set to be released in theaters on March 22, 2013. As part of the distribution deal, this will be the first film from DreamWorks Animation to be distributed by 20th Century Fox, since the departure of Paramount Pictures in 2012.

Plot

Eep is a girl in a family of Neanderthal Cavemen (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) living in pre-historic times, talking about how her family is one of the few to survive nearby, mainly due to the strict rules of her overprotective father, Grug. When in their cave home, Grug tells a story to the rest of the family which includes his wife Ugga, his daughter Sandy, his son Thunk, and his mother-in-law with a character that mirrors Eep's curious nature. He uses this story to warn the family that exploration and 'new things' pose a threat to their survival, and says to never not be afraid. This irritates the bored and adventurous Eep, and when the family falls asleep after dark, she ignores her father's advice and leaves the cave when she sees a light moving outside the cave.
Seeking the light's source, she meets Guy, an intelligent caveboy (Homo sapiens sapiens). She becomes fascinated with the fire he manages to create and is eager to learn more. He tells her about his theory that the world is reaching its 'end' and asks her to join him. She refuses and Guy leaves, but not before giving her a noise-making shell to call him if she feels the need for help. Shortly afterwards, Eep is then caught by Grug (who had been frantically searching for her). Much later, he brings her back home, planning to keep her in the cave for the rest of her life. He is later joined by the rest of the family, who Eep then tells them about Guy and shows them the shell given to her, only for them to destroy it in fear of 'new things'. An earthquake then occurs, sending everyone running for the cave, only to be stopped by Grug moments before the cave is destroyed by falling rocks. All the family then climb over the wreckage to discover an other-worldly land, much different from their usual surroundings of rocky terrain. Grug takes his family into the deep forest to find a new cave.
While becoming aware of their new surroundings, the family are chased by a "Macawnivore" (a large, macaw colored machairodont later called 'Chunky') and attacked by a swarm of "Piranhakeets" (deadly red-furred, piranha-like birds). In an act of panic, Eep sounds a horn similar to that which Guy gave her. Guy hears this and rushes to her. Thinking quickly, he creates a torch of fire, which scares the birds away. The rest of the family are then captivated by the fire, having never seen it before. They steal Guy's torch and accidentally set the land around them up in flames. Eventually, some giant corn is lit, which all rockets up to the sky, prompting a display of fireworks until landing on them as popcorn. After feeling impressed with Guy's intelligence and mind of 'ideas,' Grug bottles him in a hollow log to carry him in, then suggests that they take solitude in the cave of a nearby mountain mentioned by Guy. Guy is forcibly persuaded to lead the way, and soon begins to learn of the Croods' way of living, which he thinks of as unusual.
After an unsuccessful hunting attempt, Guy along with his 'pet' sloth, Belt (Chris Sanders), as well as Eep, build a puppet to fool and lure nearby animals. Having captured something afterwards, the family greedily devour everything they caught. Guy and Eep are more sparing. The others realize their greediness and stop eating. Grug then tells another of his morale-lowering tales, this time mirroring the events of their day, mentioning a girl Grug and Ugga had before Eep was born who did venture away from her cave and died. Guy then tells a story of his own, about a paradise he nicknames "Tomorrow".
In the morning, the family reaches a path coated in spiked rocks. A freed Guy then presents one of his various inventions called shoes. He makes some out of all the resources he can find, for each family member. This gains him some respect from the others, except for Grug, who starts to feel jealous of Guy's cleverness. After a slew of Guy's ideas help the Croods on their continuing journey, all the family members gain something. Ugga, her mother and Sandy have their first idea to get past carnivorous plants (which showed what Ugga looked like without her hairband), Thunk encounters a crocodile-like dog who he calls Douglas (and later teaches him to roll off a tree), Eep and Guy grow closer together, while Grug is stranded in a ravine, forcing Ugga to go back for him. They all reach a tree to stop for another night–except for Grug, who feels distraught by his family abandoning his traditions of 'Yesterday' for Guy's traditions of 'Tomorrow.' The next day, a 'desperate' and left-out Grug shows the others some of his ideas, which all end up failing and humiliating himself. They soon reach the mountain, where Grug is unable to convince the family that settling in nearby cave is a better option, reaches to full anger, and proceeds to attack Guy. The two become stuck in tar and Guy reveals his family died drowning in it, and their last words inspired his traditions of "Tomorrow." Grug has a change of heart towards Guy, before he and Guy use a trap to use Chunky to free themselves.
As they are about to reach the land of "Tomorrow," an earthquake opens a deep ravine in their path. Grug throws each of them across the gap and reconciles with Eep, but is left behind. He takes shelter in a cave and makes a torch. After seeing a large blank rock face, he paints a large cave-drawing of the Croods and Guy together. He then encounters Chunky, who proceeds to attack him until the torch is accidentally blown out, panicking them both. The newly reformed Chunky lies near Grug where he has an idea. He then uses a skeleton carried by the piranhakeets to transport himself, Chunky, Douglas and several other animals toward "Tomorrow," barely escaping the oncoming "end" destruction. He and the whole Crood family settle down in a paradise-like environment, and Grug invents the first hug with Eep. Grug becomes less protective, letting the family be more adventurous and risk-taking, and gaining some pets, thus bringing happiness to them all and head out towards the sun for "Tomorrow."

Olympus Has Fallen

Genre:
Action/Thriller

Directed by:
Antoine Fuqua

Starring:
Gerard Butler

Release date:
Fri 22, Mar 2013

Olympus Has Fallen is American action-thriller  film directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring an ensemble cast, including Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, and Angela Bassett. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on March 22, 2013.

Plot

Former U.S. Army Ranger Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is the lead Secret Service agent assigned to head the Presidential Detail. He maintains a personal, friendly relationship with President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart), First Lady Margaret Asher (Ashley Judd) and particularly their son Connor Asher (Finley Jacobsen). On a drive from Camp David, the car transporting the First Family crashes; Banning saves President Asher, but Margaret dies in the crash.
Eighteen months later, Banning works at the Treasury Department, within eyesight of the White House; he has been demoted from the Presidential Detail as he triggers Asher's memories of the night Margaret died. During a meeting between Asher and the prime minister of South Korea, Korean-led guerrilla forces, aided by treasonous members of the prime minister's own detail, which include Dave Forbes (Dylan McDermott), an ex-US Secret Service agent turned private contractor, mount an air and ground assault that results in the capture of the White House. Asher and several top officials are held hostage in the White House bunker, where the prime minister is killed. Before he is killed, Agent Roma (Cole Hauser) alerts head of Secret Service Lynne Jacobs (Angela Bassett) that "Olympus has fallen."
The attack has been masterminded by Kang Yeonsak (Rick Yune), an ex-North Korean terrorist who appears to be motivated by hope for a reunification of Korea. Kang seeks to use Asher's hostage status as leverage to force the U.S. military to withdraw from the Korean Peninsula, allowing the civil war to end. He also seeks to detonate all of America's nuclear weapons in their silos and destroy the country as revenge for the death of his parents. To accomplish this, he requires the access codes to a system in the bunker called Cerberus, which are held by three top government officials within the bunker, including the President. Asher orders the other two officials to reveal their codes to save their lives, certain that he will not give up his code.
During the assault by Kang's forces on the front lawn, Banning joins the side of the White House's combatants. He falls back into the White House, disables the internal surveillance and gains access to Asher's satellite ear phone, which he uses to maintain contact with Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), the Speaker of the House who is now the Acting President. Authorized to proceed, Banning's first act is to save Connor, who Kang plans to use to force Asher to reveal his Cerberus code. Despite resistance, he finds Connor hiding in the walls, thanks to the training Banning had given him, and sneaks him out of the White House before beginning reconnaissance and reducing the terrorists' numbers one by one. This includes Forbes, but not before convincing the traitor to report to Kang that Banning is dead. Meanwhile, Trumbull orders an aerial SEAL assault on the White House, but Kang deploys an advanced anti-aircraft gun system in his possession. Discovering this, Banning advises his commanders to abort the mission, but it proceeds and the new defense annihilates the assault force before Banning can stop it. Kang retaliates for the attempted infiltration by killing Vice President Charlie Rodriguez (Phil Austin).
After Banning disables Kang's communications, the terrorist tries to execute Secretary of Defense Ruth McMillan (Melissa Leo) outside the front door in front of the media, but Banning rescues her and takes out several more of Kang's men in the process. With Kang's forces dwindling, he fakes his own death, as well as Asher's, by sacrificing several of his men and the remaining hostages. Kang, Asher, and the few remaining terrorists stay in the bunker, unknown to the outside world. Kang eventually cracks Asher's code and activates Cerberus as Banning realizes that his apparent suicide was faked. As Kang attempts to escape, Banning dispatches the remaining terrorists and kills Kang in a knife fight, ultimately disabling Cerberus with the assistance of Trumbull. Banning and Asher escape the White House. After the events, the U.S. begins to heal from the attack, and Banning once again becomes head of the Presidential Detail, with Banning observing President Asher as he addresses the public.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Genre:
Comedy

Directed by:
Don Scardino

Starring:
Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde, Steve Buscemi, James Gandolfini, Brad Garrett, Alan Arkin, Jay Mohr, Gillian Jacobs

Release date:
Fri 15, Mar 2013

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a comedy film directed by Don Scardino and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, based on a story by Chad Kultgen & Tyler Mitchell, and Daley & Goldstein. The film follows Las Vegas magician Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) as he attempts to reunite with his former partner Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) to take on dangerous street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey).
The film began development in 2006, when New Line Cinema bought Kultgen's script, "Burt Dickenson: The Most Powerful Magician on Planet Earth". The development process gained momentum when Charles McDougall was hired as director in 2011, but he eventually left the project and was replaced with Scardino. Daley and Goldstein rewrote Kultgen's script which then saw further rewrites from Jason Reitman in June 2011.
Filming was scheduled to begin in October 2011, in Los Angeles, California but was pushed back to January 2012. On a $30 million budget, filming began on January 10, 2012 in Nevada with filming later moving to Los Angeles.

Plot

In 1982, young Albert is harassed by bullies. His mother gives him a special magic trick set by veteran magician Rance Holloway as his birthday present. He studies the instructional video and begins to practice some tricks, attracting the attention of a classmate, Anthony. They practice together and eventually become professional magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton, earning them success and an ongoing headlining act at the Aztec Casino in Las Vegas. However, after ten years of performing the same tricks over and over again, Anton is fed up with Burt's ego, which has already cost them previous female assistants, called Nicole in the act. In a rush, Burt enlists production assistant Jane as the new Nicole.
Burt and Anton encounter up-and-coming street magician Steve Gray performing a unique yet horrifying magic card trick for his TV magic show, Brain Rapist. Audience numbers soon dwindle at Burt and Anton's show. Taking a cue from Gray's own endurance-based stunts, Anton suggests that he and Burt try a similar tack--locking themselves up in a plastic cage called the Hot Box hung above the ground. Overconfident, Burt does not prepare for the stunt and almost instantly falls into a panic, causing the stunt to fail and injuring Anton. Anton angrily ends his partnership with Burt, and Jane also quits.
Burt refuses to change his act, running his two man show alone to disastrous results. Aztec owner Doug Munny shuts down the production and Burt, having squandered his earnings over the years, is left broke. Despondent, Burt tries to find work and is eventually hired as an entertainer at an assisted-living facility catering to former Vegas entertainers. There he meets Holloway, who retired several years before because he found that he was no longer happy performing. Holloway counsels Burt about magic, inspiring him to remember the initial wonder that led him to become a magician. Burt is shocked to see Jane--herself an aspiring magician--working for Gray. Appalled by Gray's style, Holloway and Burt polish their own tricks. Jane visits her grandmother at the facility and patches things up with Burt.
Doug is opening a new casino-hotel and is offering a five-year contract to the winner of a talent search on the casino's opening night. He invites Burt to do a magic show at his son's birthday party, but Gray also appears and tries to upstage Burt with his own tricks. Disgusted by Gray's actions, Jane leaves his show. Burt reconnects with Anton, who has been distributing magic sets in Cambodia. They consider ideas for the talent search and decide to resurrect an old trick they had deemed impossible.
At the show, Gray's performance involves him drilling into his brain, claiming it will not affect him. Holloway introduces Burt's, Anton's, and Jane's performance, the "Disappearing Audience". The group secretly sedate the audience with sleeping gas and then transport them to an outside location in the same seating locations. The audience awakes and responds with awe, and Doug awards the headlining act to Burt and Anton; they ask Jane to be their opening act. The trio then perform the Disappearing Audience trick again, returning everyone to the casino theater. A now mentally impaired Gray watches on with the drill bit still in his skull.
